2024 “Cross-border Collaborations as a Tool for Addressing Disaster Risks”
The 9th APRU-IRIDeS Multi-Hazards Summer School was organized on 30th July – 2nd August at Tohoku University. It was attended by 53 participants from 28 universities in 11 regions. It was opened with welcome remarks by Prof. Toshiya Ueki (Vice-President of Tohoku University), followed by Prof. Shinichi Kuriyama (Director of IRIDeS, Tohoku University). From the APRU secretariat, Mr. Benjamin Zhou gave his opening remarks.
Day 1 focused on the recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The speakers from the IRIDeS faculty spoke about the recovery efforts, housing and community recovery, and the lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Accident. On Day 2, the participants learned from the recovery experience of the local government (Tagajo City), inclusive disaster risk reduction from the perspective of children needing medical care, and the role of NGOs. Day 3 invited speakers from UC Davis in the US, University of Tokyo, and Bangladesh Agricultural University. On Day 4, the participants visited the Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum and the Interim Storage Facility for Removed Soil and Waste.
The 2024 Multi-Hazards Summer School objectives
- Understand the mechanism of the international disaster risk reduction strategies
- Learn from the experiences and recovery process from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami
- Learn from various disaster science research conducted in different countries
- Discuss the major challenges and roles of academia in progressing disaster risk reduction in each country
