In addition to the annual events such as the Summer School Program and the Multi-Hazards Symposium, the Multi-Hazards Program has initiated several important activities and events. The special events include the public forum organized at the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (UNWCDRR) in March 2015 in Sendai, Japan. APRU plays an important role as a university network to contribute to discussions at international and regional levels by addressing the key issues in the region. One of the key responsibilities of University is to prepare for emergencies to protect human lives and assets on campus. The Campus Safety Program highlights the importance of disaster preparedness on campus and advocates the need for its capacity development among the APRU member universities. In order to share the challenges and the ideas on what academia can do to improve the situation, the Multi-Hazards Program issued the Statement which includes 6 challenges and commitments by academia. It becomes the foundation for the Program to identify and pursue its future activities.
