2016 APRU-IRIDeS Summer School

“Handing down disaster experiences and lessons-learnt to the next generation”

The APRU-IRIDeS Multi-Hazards Summer School was conducted on 19-22 July 2016 at Tohoku University. Total nearly 50 participants including students and faculty members from 18 universities in 11 countries (Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, USA and Hong Kong) attended this event.

At the opening ceremony, Prof. Susumu Satomi (President of Tohoku University), Mr. Keith Chi-ho Wong (Director, APRU Secretariat), and Prof. Fumihiko Imamura (Director of IRIDeS) gave the opening remarks. The speakers included the faculty members of IRIDeS, University of California, Davis, University of Philippines, University of Hawaii Manoa and the local government officials of Sendai City and Tagajo City. Moreover, the speakers were invited from NGO(Church World Service (CWS) Japan) and the private sector(Kokusai Kogyo Co., Ltd.). At the Group work, the participants discussed the role of various stakeholders in disaster management and how we can pass on lessons learned to the next generation.

On the Day 3, the participants visited the affected areas such as Natori City and Tagajo City to understand the reconstruction processes and the local government initiatives such as seawalls and disaster public houses. Furthermore, it gave an opportunity to learn from the experiences of the affected people who are living in a disaster public house in Tagajo City and of the high school students at the Tagajo High School.

The 2016 Multi-Hazards Summer School objectives

  • Understand the mechanism of the international DRR strategy
  • Learn from the experience and recovery process from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami
  • Learn from various DRR projects that have been implemented in the Tohoku region and overseas
  • Discuss the role of science and technology as well as universities in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction
